Daily Chores For Children By Age

Giving children chores helps them understand that everyone needs to pitch in to keep a home clean. However, getting kids to clean isn't always easy in the beginning and realistically how much help can we expect from children anyways? The answer really depends on the age of the child(ren) so below, we've listed some great chores for kids to tackle for their specific age groups!

DAILY Chores for children ages two and under:

  • Get diaper.
  • Put toys in bins or drawers.
  • Put dirty clothes in hamper (if the top is low enough).
  • Help take clean clothes from the dryer. 
  • Help pick up stray books and magazines.
  • Help set the table.
  • Hang up towel (on hook).

DAILY Chores for children ages three to five:

  • All of the above, minus getting a diaper (if applicable)  
  • Pull comforter up over the bed.
  • Put toys and games (and all their pieces) in the proper boxes or bins.
  • Place dirty dishes on the kitchen counter.
  • Help unload the dishwasher.
  • Fill the pet's water dish.
  • Take backpack from the car into the house

DAILY Chores for children ages six to nine:

  • Any of the above.
  • Hang up towels / help put laundry away.
  • Decide which clothes are dirty and which can be re-worn.
  • Feed pets.
  • Exercise pets.
  • Clean pet's bowl and cage.
  • Help make breakfast.
  • Set and clear the table.
  • Do simple cooking tasks such as rinsing vegetables.
  • Take out trash and recycling, and remove compostable material.
  • Pick up trash in the car and empty car trash bag.

 

DAILY Chores for children ages ten to thirteen:

  • Any of the above.    
  • Pour beverages for meals.
  • Help hand-wash (or pre-wash) dishes.
  • Make self (and siblings, if applicable) lunch for school.
  • Unload the dishwasher.Disinfect kitchen and bathroom counter tops.

 

DAILY Chores for children ages fourteen to seventeen:

  • Any of the previous chores.    
  • Prepare meals.
  • Clean coffeemaker.
  • Wash car.
